The official music video for "Mr. Jones" by Counting Crows, released on June 17, 2009, features a narrative and performance-based visual accompaniment to the band's breakout 1993 hit. The video captures the band performing while intercut with scenes that evoke the song's lyrical themes of fame, identity, and the desire for significance. Core Themes and Content The song explores the aspiration for stardom and the complex emotions surrounding public recognition. The lyrics depict two individuals, the narrator and Mr. Jones, navigating life, observing "beautiful women," and contemplating their place in the world. Aspiration for Stardom: The lyrics express a desire to be "big, big stars" [03:03] and the hope that fame will alleviate loneliness [01:45], [02:35]. Identity and Comparison: The narrator compares himself to artistic figures like Picasso [02:08] and Bob Dylan [03:38], reflecting a struggle to define his own identity and worth. The Search for Belief: A recurring element is the plea for something to believe in [01:11], highlighting a sense of existential uncertainty. Narrative Structure The visual narrative follows a loose progression that mirrors the lyrical journey: Segment Primary Focus Intro Setting the scene at the "New Amsterdam" [00:13]. Development Interaction with characters like the flamenco dancer [00:23] and the internal monologue about beauty and status. Reflection The middle section emphasizes the desire to "paint my picture" [01:51] and the identification with artistic symbols. Climax The realization of wanting to be seen, represented by the line "I want to see me staring right back at me" [03:54]. Visual Elements The video utilizes a performance setting, placing the band in a context that emphasizes the raw, slightly gritty atmosphere described in the lyrics. The camera work frequently transitions between shots of the band playing and stylistic clips that represent the "fairy tales" and observations the characters make while out together [01:24]. Summary of Artistic Aspirations The following diagram illustrates the internal hierarchy of desires expressed by the narrator: Plaintext [ STARDENT DESIRE FOR FAME] | --------------------- | | [BEING A LION] [AVOIDING LONELINESS] | | --------------------- | [CONSTANT SEARCH FOR BELIEF] The video serves as a quintessential representation of 90s alternative rock aesthetics, grounded in the band's earnest performance style. Funfact: This is based on a night where Adam Duritz and Marty Jones (the bass player of Durtz's former band the Himalayas *corrected*) went to the famous New Ansterdam pub. Martie's dad was a band leader, and there was a troup of Spanish (Flamenco *corrected*) dancers they toured with. (A drummer, named Kenny Dale Johnson, was there *corrected*) was chatting up three enthralled beautiful twenty something dancers, sucessfully, and Duritz and Jones were envious of his skills, and confidence. They wished they could be as confident as him, and have the courage to approach beautiful women, as they were both shy around girls at the time. The New Amsterdam is now called the International Sports Bar.

I was 20 when this song came out. It was all shining summers, good friends, beautiful girls that smelled like cinnamon and great music. You couldn't tell me that I wasn't going to live forever. Lol good times
