The video "Michael Dell: The Father of the PC Industry" by Business Casual details how Michael Dell revolutionized the computer industry by introducing the direct-to-consumer sales model and scaling a dorm-room startup into a global technology giant. Key Takeaways & Timeline Early Business Instincts From a young age, Michael Dell displayed a passion for technology and a natural knack for business [00:35]. During high school, while selling newspaper subscriptions for the Houston Post, he realized cold calls were inefficient. Instead, he targeted newlyweds and families who had recently moved into the neighborhood—those most likely to buy a subscription—earning $18,000 that summer [00:54]. From Dorm Room to Startup (1983–1984) 1983: While enrolled as a pre-med student at university, Dell spent his spare time repairing, upgrading, and selling personal computers from his dorm room [01:15]. January 1984: Recognizing the financial potential, 19-year-old Dell dropped out of college and registered his company as PC's Limited [01:28]. The Direct Selling Model To compete against established giants like IBM that relied on retail outlets (such as RadioShack or Best Buy)—which added 10% to 30% markups—Dell eliminated the middleman [01:48]: Magazine Ads & Customization: He advertised directly to tech-savvy consumers through computer magazines, allowing customers to order custom-assembled PCs built with component parts sourced from Asian manufacturers [02:31]. Proven Concept: PC's Limited generated over $6 million in sales during its very first year [02:56]. Corporate Expansion & Rebranding 1987–1988: Dell renamed the business Dell Computer Corporation at age 22. By 1988, sales skyrocketed to $160 million [03:13]. Winning Over Corporate Clients: Critics doubted whether direct sales could work for corporate buyers. Dell addressed this by pre-loading PCs with custom software tailored specifically to each client's enterprise needs [03:33]. The Internet Boom & Global Dominance July 1996: Dell launched its direct-sales website, enabling customers to order computers online without phone calls or faxes [04:16]. Rapid Online Growth: Within two months of launching the website, online sales reached $2 million per day, climbing to $5 million per day by 1998 [04:30]. Legacy: Dell solidified its place as a top global computer manufacturer, with Michael Dell continuing as CEO through its evolution [04:45]. I used to live in Austin TX and I work the assembly line, Dell Computers there, Our suoervisors would always tell us no to slack off or be too loud/playful since Michael Dell walks at times around his own assembly line buildings and monitors how workers do their jobs... now that's commitment. Also was said back then: " don't expect to see him in a suit and tie, He is always in jeans an t shirt " Nothing fancy at all "

I own 2 Dell XPS computers for almost 10 years and have experience almost no issues. The desktop has had no issues. The laptop...the fan makes some noise sometimes, but it is almost 10 years old, so I can't really fault it. I will replace the fan at some point and it will be an awesome laptop still. Both still serve my needs almost ten years after purchase.

Several years ago I used to be a server at a fancy steakhouse in downtown Austin. We did a couple of private parties for Dell. Michael was always a super nice humble guy, and very down to earth. I always enjoyed dealing with him.
