What happens when the superpower that guaranteed your safety tells you that its protection is conditional?  For eighty years, Europe treated its survival as America's problem, but the security blanket has finally been yanked away. Times Defence Editor Larisa Brown details the radical, hushed scramble to bypass US vetoes and build a

This video, titled "NATO’s Secret Plans to Defend Europe Without the US," explores the growing consensus among European policymakers that the continent must prepare for a future where it can no longer rely on the United States for security. As of 2026, the reliance on the American "nuclear-backed wing" [00:07] is being re-evaluated due to political shifts in Was

hington and a perceived lack of commitment from the US [01:08].

Key Strategic Proposals

To address the potential scenario where the US refuses to assist in a security crisis, European security circles are discussing several radical "backup options" [00:25]:

Nuclear Hedging Coalition: Rather than seeking to become full nuclear powers immediately, countries like G

ermany, Poland, Sweden, and Ukraine are considering sharing advanced nuclear technologies and dual-use infrastructure [02:42]. The goal is to reach a "threshold" state where Russia cannot be certain these countries would not cross into nuclear armament [03:03].

Pre-Delegated Joint Force Commands: To bypass the requirement for unanimous consensus—which could be b

locked by the US—proposals suggest granting regional joint force commands automatic, pre-delegated powers [04:12]. If a member is attacked, these coalitions would activate immediately [04:38].

Aggressive Deterrence: The strategy includes a proactive posture, which involves potential plans to seize Russian territory, such as Kaliningrad, to use as leverage in neg

otiations [04:54].

Current Public Sentiment and Challenges

European public trust in the US as an ally has plummeted [02:01].

Country Trust in US Defense Commitment

Britain 35%

Germany 27%

Sweden 22%

Despite this shift, public support for national atomic arsenals is rising, with 65% of Poles and 56% of Swedes expressing support for such measures [03:16].

The Brit

ish Outlier

A significant obstacle highlighted is the United Kingdom. Analysts describe Britain as a "complacent outlier" [06:26] that has historically outsourced its strategic thinking to the US. Because British defense culture is deeply anchored in "US primacy first" [06:51], it has been slow to engage with the new, independent European defense architecture be

ing built privately by other allies [06:43].

Strategic Summary

The emerging European strategy relies on a "pragmatic de facto division of labor" [06:07] rather than new, formal treaties, to avoid signaling a complete break with Washington:

France: Nuclear backstop and expeditionary capacity.

Poland & Germany: Anchors of the eastern flank.

UK: Focus on the North

Sea and the high north.

The underlying reality, as presented in the video, is that with the US commitment now seen as conditional [08:01], Europe is forced to develop the capability to manage its own continental survival independently [08:25].

The equivalent of Article 5 of the EU is far more binding than NATO's. It doesn't just say that everyone commits to the extent of their means; it's a declaration of war against all European member states of the EU. Relying on the US is taking a huge risk.

This is literally a policy of the Green Party in England and the media called them crazy for suggesting it.
