IMHO they should just keep it in Australia and send the engineers. That seems like the lowest risk, lowest cost option to me. Remove the engines and other interesting bits and ship them back.

All these people who are saying the heat shield won't work are many of the same people who said that landing a rocket wasn't possible.

As an Australian who has worked for defence, I think Australia is more than capable and has ITAR classified companies. Space X should look at investigating in Australia. Maybe long term even having a site in Australia permanently.

There are a couple of recovery dock ships that could carry SS back. The Dockwise company's Mighty Servant 1 & 2 have just enough deck length to carry the ship. And they can partially submerge to pick up a floating vessel in open water.

Falcon 9 is a vastly inferior rocket compared to a fully operational orbital starship V3 that only needs heat shield renewal and spacex still has 90% of the space market just with falcon

For the 133 out of 135 successful Space Shuttle flights, NASA had to replace 30 to 100 (average ~50) heatshield tiles after each mission out of ~24,000 individual tiles on an Orbiter. That process took far more time (weeks) than SpaceX requires to replace 100 Starship tiles, about one day. Evidence from the two Block 3 Starship test flights (IFT-12 and 13) shows that less than 10 heatshield tiles were missing after splashdown and that tile damage was minimal and mostly cosmetic.

heat-shield of a starship is a simple design made of mass produced tiles of same shape, and it can't be compared to space shuttle where each tile had a custom shape and size. furthermore starship is stainless steel so a little heat from blow-by will not destroy the ship as it happened to space shuttle's aluminium frame.

I wonder if SpaceX could use "You'll thank me later" to transport the ship from Australia to Starbase without towing it through open water? Would be one hell of a way to debut a transport barge!
