Here's a fun fact: the current ruling dynasty of Sweden isn't Swedish at all! It was founded not too long ago by a lowborn Frenchman, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, and his story is as implausible as it is fascinating. Correction: at 3:47, the king in question is Charles XIII, not Charles XII ------------------------------------------

This video provides a detailed historical overview of how Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, a low-born French soldier, rose to become King of Sweden and Norway, establishing the house that rules Sweden to this day.

Detailed Overview of the Content

1. Origins and Early Military Career

Humble Beginnings: Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was born into a lawyer's family in southern France [00:33]. By age 14, he was working as a lawyer's apprentice [00:41].

Joining the Army: Following his father's sudden death, he shifted paths completely at age 17 and joined the French Royal Army [00:49].

Early Success: He was nicknamed "Sergea

nt Fair Legs" due to his posture and height, achieving the rank of sergeant by age 22 [01:04]. Under the Old Regime, his commoner status capped his advancement, leading him to welcome the French Revolution [01:14].

Revolutionary Rise: During the French invasion of Germany, his leadership when outnumbered 3-to-1 against Austrian forces caught the eye of Napoleon Bonaparte [01:37].

2. Relationship with Napoleon and the Battle of Lubeck

Imperial Elite: He married Napoleon’s ex-fiancée and sister-in-law, integrating directly into the Bonaparte family [02:19]. When Napoleon established the First French Empire, Be

rnadotte was named a Marshal and made Prince of Ponte Corvo [02:37].

The Turning Point (Battle of Lubeck): During this battle, Bernadotte captured roughly 1,600 Swedish soldiers [02:53]. Instead of mistreating them, he hosted their commander and treated the captives so exceptionally well that they returned home singing his praises [03:02].

3. Sweden's Crisis and the Crown Invitation

Geopolitical Rut: By the early 19th century, Sweden had suffered humiliating territorial losses to Russia and Prussia [03:18]. They desperately needed a competent, strong military leader [03:32].

delegation sought Napoleon's input on their succession crisis, but Napoleon was indifferent [03:55]. A young messenger named Otto—whose uncle was the commander well-treated by Bernadotte at Lubeck—took the initiative to offer the Swedish crown directly to Bernadotte [04:08].

Parliamentary Approval: Though Otto initially faced backlash back home for his rogue move, the Swedish Parliament realized Bernadotte was an ideal candidate: he had a stellar military record, strong connections to Napoleon, and immense popularity among Swedish soldiers [04:46].

4. Reign and Legacy

Rule as King: He was named Crown Prince

in 1810 and took full control of ruling immediately, officially becoming king in 1818 [05:20].

Strategic Reorientation: Ironically, his first major action was to ally Sweden with Russia against Napoleon, which allowed him to successfully secure Norway in a single summer campaign [05:29].

Enduring House: The Bernadotte dynasty established by a common French soldier has successfully held the Swedish throne for over two centuries and continues to rule today [05:53].

Throughout his reign Bernadotte never let anyone see his bare back, not even his private doctor (Who allegedly saw everything else).

An interesting story is that when he and his wife arrived in Scania (southern most region of sweden) they were met by people shouting "Vive la reine" and were amazed by the Swedes speaking french.

When Bernadotte started living in Sweden, he didn't like the local food, so he ordered to have in every meal, a boiled egg, so he could have some of it in between the main food, to avoid the flavors he disliked. Then it became a tradition for the swedish king to have a boiled egg in every meal, till the present days.
