I went to the Soviet Union on a summer study program when Brezhnev was in power. It was the best learning experience of my young life. Those in power had access to limousines, special stores not available to the public, vacation homes--you name it. For the average person, life was hard. There were only the most basic food items in the food shops and things we take for granted were not available. There was a saying that, if you saw a line of people, get in it, then find out what they were selling. There was no private property. The government owned everything. People were on waiting lists for years to be assigned an apartment in a city such as Moscow or St. Petersburg. Then there was imprisonment, hard labor, etc. for those who opposed the ruling party. Returning to the USA, when our plane landed in New York, I wanted to kiss the ground out of gratitude for what this country offers! Today's young people have no idea what they are asking for.
